Crimson Peak - Scene Analysis

At the start of the scene, the woman is awakened by her dog barking. Whilst waking up, the camera starts to slowly zoom out which shows us her surroundings and the setting. The shot shows us this film is set in the past by the interior of the house; it looks abandoned and quite gothic. In the background , you can hear noises like howls that creates a creepy atmosphere which is a good way to set the scene.

Throughout this scene the lighting is low key which indicates mystery. The only light that is noticeable is the patches of bright light from the candles; they symbolise light in the darkness of life. The low key lighting contributes to the tone of the scene. It adds to the theme of horror as it's hard to see things with darkness around. Also the candles only seem to really light up the woman, this shows that during this scene she is the most important thing that the audience should focus on.

Horror conventions are the main components that make a horror film. Starting with the location, in this scene we can clearly see that it is set in an old, abandoned house. This adds to the theme of horror as most typical horror films are set in haunted places. In this scene we see a type of demon/monster trying to attack or kill the woman. Monsters are a big part of horror films, they make them scarier and tend to frighten the audience more. Throughout this scene, we don't see any weapons used, the woman is only holding a candle which again adds to the mysterious atmosphere created.

In this scene, editing has been used to create cuts between scenes. This may create a quick paced feeling as one scene finishes and another begins. Special effects have also been added when the demon appears out of the floor. They have been used to make this part more realistic to look like its actually real to make the audience feel scared. Special effects are added in post-production.

Sound is a big part of horror films. Without sound, horror films will not come across as scary. Sound is used to create tension and builds up. In this scene, before the woman opens the cupboard, tense music builds up until she opens the cupboard when the music stops to symbolise nothing is there. It is meant to make the audience feel as if they are on the edge of their seat as they don't know what's going to happen next. After she opens the cupboard, the audience may feel relieved because there is nothing there, however when she turns around we hear music again which tells the audience that something is going to happen. Before all of this, in the background when the woman awakens, we can hear howls and doors creaking which again adds to the tension in the scene, building up to when the demon papers behind the door.

Different types of shots are used throughout this scene. Long shots are used when the woman is walking around. These types of shots give us a sense of time and place. We can see its dark indicating its the night. Its also set in the past by her costume and surroundings. Close ups are the opposite of long shots. They take up at least 80% of the screen and can be intimate and revealing. They easily show us the emotions of the character by their facial expressions. They also make us feel more connected with the character as it feels as if the audience is there with them. Medium shots are in between long shots and close ups. They are king of neutral which makes it easy for filmmakers to rely on and over use.

Overall the horror genre is presented throughout this scene using a variety of different horror conventions, editing, lighting and sound. Without these elements included, horror films wouldn't be considered as scary and tense. Because they are included in this scene, the audience may feel intrigued when watching as well as frightened and scared.

Amy scene analysis

In the first scene, Kapadi uses home footage to show how young and happy Amy was as an adolescent in 1998. We see a clip of her singing happy birthday to one of her best friends. It then skips forward to January 2001 and then six months later we see her in a rehearsal studio in North London. Kapadi again uses old footage that was shot of her in the studio. He uses voiceovers to give context to the home footage clips. He sometimes slows down the clips for it to fit with the voiceovers. This technique creates a more intense atmosphere especially towards the end of the film. Kapadi tends to display the lyrics of Amy’s songs on screen as she is singing, with more home footage playing in the background. The way he displays her lyrics on screen help the audience to understand the meaning of the song and perhaps how Amy was feeling at the moment in her life. The lyrics also tend to fade in and out as they are displayed. This technique is used multiple times throughout the film. Most of the

The Universe is Ours - Short Film Synopsis

For this creative assignment, I have decided to do a social realism screenplay for a short film. This short film is going to be focused on two girls. Luna Evans is a 17 year old girl who is bisexual and currently suffering with depression as well as the death of her father. She has a close bond with her younger brother and sister, however her and her mother do not get along well as her mother does not accept her sexuality. Marley Scott is 18 who lost her parents when she was young. She is homeless as her Aunt and Uncle kicked her out for doing drugs. With both girls feeling lost and alone, they end up finding one another on the top of a roof. Watching the sun slowly set, they share their whole life stories together (along with their awesome taste in music) and realise how much that that one person can change your life forever.
